Pickleball Ontario congratulates Ryan Hanes on his appointment as Director of Competition with Pickleball Canada.

Ryan has been a fixture in Ontario pickleball for years. Most recently, he served as Tournament Director for our 2025 Provincial Championship and captain of Team Ontario’s 50+ squad at the 2025 National Championship in Winnipeg.

As owner and founder of True North Pickleball, Ryan has directed over one hundred tournaments, including two National Championships and four Regionals. He is a Pickleball Canada and USAP certified referee, a PPR Certified Teaching Professional and Clinician, and is recognized as one of Canada’s leading instructors.

Ryan is also an accomplished competitive player. His tournament success includes winning the 2022 Canadian Nationals 4.5 35+ Men’s division, the 2019 Canadian Nationals 4.5 Men’s division, and earning silver at the 2019 US Open 4.5 19+ division.

In his new role as Director of Competition, Ryan will serve as Tournament Director for the National Championship and oversee Pickleball Canada’s sanctioning program, acting as a resource for tournament operators across the country. He will provide mentorship and support to Provincial Championship organizers and play a key role in developing a high-performance program to prepare Canadian athletes for World Championship and Olympic competition. The position represents a significant step forward in professionalizing competitive pickleball infrastructure across Canada.

While we’ll miss having Ryan so closely involved in Ontario events, we’re proud to see one of our own taking on this important national role.

Congratulations, Ryan. Ontario Pickleball is cheering for you.

Pickleplex Social Club to host national championship after successful 2025 Ontario Provincials

On Monday, January 12, Pickleball Canada announced that the 2026 National Championship will take place in Ontario, August 25-30, 2026, at Pickleplex Social Club’s Downsview and Vaughan locations in the Greater Toronto Area.

Pickleball Ontario is excited to see Canada’s premier national competition coming to our province. Ontario has developed strong pickleball infrastructure in recent years, and we’re proud to see our facilities recognized as capable of hosting national-level competition.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming the National Championship to Ontario,” said Jonathon Moody, Vice President of Pickleball Ontario. “This venue hosted our own Provincial Championships last year, and we know Ontario has the facilities and community to deliver a great experience for players and spectators from across the country.”

The championship will feature competition across 21 indoor courts over five days, including singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and the Provincial Team Competition (PTC). In 2026, the PTC will serve as an evaluation criterion for selection into Pickleball Canada’s National Development Program, strengthening Canada’s athlete pathway on the international stage.

Team Ontario’s Silver Medal Performance

The Provincial Team Competition has special significance for Ontario after our strong showing at the inaugural 2025 event in Winnipeg, where Team Ontario captured the silver medal, finishing just behind British Columbia. With the 2026 championship on home turf, our athletes will have the chance to compete for gold with the support of the Ontario pickleball community.

This gives our community the opportunity to watch the country’s top athletes competing at the highest level and to rally behind Team Ontario as they aim for gold.

Pickleball Ontario is excited to help our community get to know our board members. In this edition, we are pleased to introduce Ken Haggert.

Ken was born and raised in Toronto, where he spent much of his career in Facilities Management, specializing in Door Automation. Now “semi-retired,” he proudly runs his own business, KahRah Enterprises, which focuses on the installation, servicing, and project management of Door Automation systems. Over the years, Ken has developed expert-level skills in this field. Eleven years ago, he and his wife relocated to Kawartha Lakes, a place Ken fondly refers to as home to the best ice cream in Ontario. If you haven’t yet tried Kawartha Dairies ice cream, it’s definitely worth the trip! Ken and his wife have been married for 34 years, and together they’ve fully embraced the active, community-oriented lifestyle of their new home.

Ken discovered pickleball after retiring to Kawartha Lakes, and what began as a new pastime quickly grew into a passion for the sport and its growth. Today, he serves as a Director of the Kawartha Lakes Pickleball Association, where he is deeply involved in supporting players and community development.

Committed to learning and leadership, Ken holds his NCCP Level 1 coaching certification and is currently pursuing Level 2. His dedication to improving player experiences and strengthening organizational foundations makes him a strong addition to the Pickleball Ontario Board.

Ken is an active contributor, sitting on several board committees including Marketing, Affiliation, PCNS (Pickleball Canada National System), and Club Engagement. Through these roles, he is focused on building connections, supporting clubs across the province, and helping guide the future of pickleball in Ontario.

In 1984, Ken graduated from the University of Waterloo, where he earned a Bachelor of Environmental Studies with a minor in Geography.

We are thrilled to have Ken Haggert on the board and look forward to his contributions to Ontario’s pickleball community.

Pickleball Ontario announces the retirement of Head Official Karen Hill after nine years of exemplary service to our officiating program. Karen’s leadership has been instrumental in building a strong foundation for officiating across the province, expanding our roster of certified referees, and developing comprehensive training initiatives including the introduction of the Trainer role. Under her guidance, Ontario has grown from one Certified Referee to five, with additional candidates expected to achieve certification in 2026.

Andrea Blackwell will assume the role of Head Official, with a full transition currently underway. All materials and responsibilities are being formally transferred to ensure continuity in our officiating program as we head into the 2026 tournament season.

We extend our sincere thanks to Karen Hill for her outstanding contributions to Pickleball Ontario and the development of officiating standards across the province. We also congratulate Andrea Blackwell on her new role and look forward to the continued growth of our officiating program under her leadership.

Love-The-Game Information Sessions Off to a Great Start

The first Love-The-Game virtual information session was delayed at the last minute due to the Blue Jays’ World Series run, but that didn’t stop 38 club representatives from attending the inaugural session titled “Municipal Matters: Working with Local Government.”

love-the-game-session-1
First Session in November 2025

Pickleball Ontario Vice-President Jonathon Moody moderated a discussion about how clubs have partnered with their local municipal governments to develop pickleball venues. Bill O’Byrne from the Peterborough Pickleball Association and Chris Derochie from the North Bay Pickleball Association shared their success stories working with municipalities to support and construct pickleball facilities.

In the second session, 25 club representatives attended “Love-The-Game: Incorporation & HST.” Pickleball Ontario Treasurer Ben Seto moderated a discussion about how and why clubs might consider incorporation, and when charging and collecting HST becomes necessary, regardless of incorporation status. Ben was joined by Shui Luo of Luo Legal to explain incorporation, while Ben presented information about HST requirements.

Our next Love-The-Game Information session will be held on January 27th. The topic: “Drilling with PCNS: Making the Most of PCNS’s Communication, Webpage, and Event-Making Tools.”

For those unfamiliar, PCNS (Pickleball Canada National System) is a comprehensive bilingual platform that all affiliated clubs have access to. It provides clubs with membership management tools including direct signup with one-fee payment to club, provincial, and national levels, automatic receipt of fees to club bank accounts, and full membership tracking. PCNS also offers a free customizable website, event management capabilities for clinics and social events, and mass email communication. It’s an all-in-one system designed to simplify club operations and improve member engagement.

We’re looking for one or two members to share their insights with PCNS during the session. Please drop us a line if interested. Registration for all sessions can be found HERE.

Past Love-The-Game sessions are now posted on the Pickleball Ontario website HERE.

Have a suggestion for a future Love-The-Game session or need the password? We’d love to hear from you at info@pickleballontario.org to share your ideas.

As we close out 2025, I want to start with a heartfelt thank you to Ian, our past president. Ian guided Pickleball Ontario through some truly challenging times and never stopped pushing us forward. From leading our Provincial Championship to success, despite all the unknowns and budget hurdles, to keeping our momentum strong when the path wasn’t always clear, his leadership made all the difference. We’re deeply grateful for everything he did to steady the ship.

I also want to share how honoured I feel to step into the role of President. This past year hasn’t been easy, but the support from our board and our clubs has meant the world. You stuck with us through the transition, and that patience and encouragement reminded me just how special this community really is. To all our clubs across Ontario, you are the heartbeat of Pickleball Ontario, and watching how you rallied together has been inspiring.

As the holidays arrive, I hope you find time to relax, celebrate with loved ones, and maybe sneak in a few games on the court. Looking ahead, we’ve got some exciting announcements coming in January – new support for our clubs and what’s shaping up to be an incredible tournament season. 2026 is going to be a strong year for Pickleball Ontario, and I can’t wait to share it with all of you.

Wishing you joy, rest, and plenty of pickleball.

Deanna, President, Pickleball Ontario

A Bridgenorth woman is part of the first Team Ontario ever put together by fledgling Pickleball Ontario.
Marie Aubie is part of a mixed five-person team competing at the MiLP Nationals (Minor League Pickleball) being held in Orange County, California on Friday through Sunday.
MiLP is an innovative team competition where teams of four players (two women and two men) compete against each other over several days. It is a novel and engaging format, with twists on traditional matchups and scoring for games, matches, and
tiebreakers. It encompasses gender matchups and mixed doubles. The tiebreaker is called the Dream Breaker and it challenges players by having them play singles, rotating among each team member till they reach 21 points.
The team, which ranges in age from their late 20s to mid 50s, was selected based on their results at the provincial championship series and also includes Carolina Hack, Carlo Sguassero, Stephen Robinson and Kyle Hermetz.
“I’m super excited, I can’t wait,” said Aubie, 47. “We’re going to get all kitted out and it’s going to be great to be representing Ontario and Canada as well because I don’t know if there will be any other Canadian teams there. Just to show them we’re playing this game as well and that it’s really popular here, too.
Aubie had never played pickle ball until she discovered it in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It was a way to play with my kids outside fairly safely,” she said. “It kind of escalated from there. It’s incredibly addictive and I just found that I was getting better and better all the time. One of my kids plays with me as well.”
Aubie is a native of New Zealand who met her husband Jerry, who is from Oshawa, when they worked on a Caribbean cruise ship. They originally settled in New Zealand and moved to Canada eight years ago. They moved with their two sons Vaughan, 15and Emerson, 12, to Bridgenorth from Whitby two years ago and she immersed herself in the local pickle ball community.
She plays regularly at the Knights of Columbus Park courts, the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre, Trent Athletic Centre and anywhere else she could get on a court. She and Vaughan won the mixed doubles event at the Kawartha Open at Bonnerworth Park earlier this year.

“I play in a lot of different tournaments in Ontario and I usually medal in all of them. Ihave a lot of different partners,” said Aubie, who works at Park Place Financial.
She had no real background in racquet sports other than as a child she used to hit a tennis ball against the wall of her home but she never competed in the sport. her athletic background was in endurance running many years ago.
“It’s one of those games you can get very good at in a short amount of time if you playa lot and you really dedicate yourself to playing it the right way,” she said.
This is her first foray into international competition.
“It might even be my last,” she said. “I am 47 so if I don’t do anything else in pickle ball this might be it and is pretty cool.”
She didn’t know about this event until she got a call out of the blue from Pickleball Ontario inviting her to join Team Ontario.
“My first reaction was, do you know how old I am?” she said, with a laugh. “My second reaction was, of course I want to go to California for a free trip. I don’t know all the people who were picked but I’m familiar with most of them and I was pretty happy. I thought it would be a good team.”

With the assistance of the Blind River Pickleball Club who loaned their equipment and expertise, pickleball has been successively introduced to the youth and community.

A Regional Pickleball tournament has been proposed for May 2024 with at least 4 other high schools interested in taking part,  WC Eaket Secondary School in Blind River  has 14 players practicing 2 times a week  with more expected.  The school recently purchased enough equipment for four courts including paddles and balls.  Thanks to this equipment their students are having their first ever intramural Pickleball tournament.

Thanks to the generous financial assistance of the Blind River Rotary Club, enough equipment was purchased for a second high school École Secondaire Jeunesse Nord. Interested staff at the schools are eager to get their students involved in the sport.

PO Happenings

The day dawned gloomy and rainy but developed into a beautiful August afternoon. A perfect day for the “That Pickleball Fling Thing!” at the Flesherton Fling.

A sign from the universe:

As a new Club, just formed in May of this year, promoting and growing the game is BIG on our to-do list. We took it as a sign from the universe that National Pickleball Day in Canada, August 12th, fell on the same date as our community’s annual arts & crafts festival, The Flesherton Fling. Naturally, we called our event, “That Pickleball Fling Thing!” It met with enthusiasm from adults and children alike in a fun, free-flowing way. Many were keen to grab a paddle and get on the court, which doubles as a basketball court. We had a handful of experienced pickleball players offering guidance as raw recruits came along.

Bob Riehl, a Pickleball Ontario Ambassador, provided a wide range of demo paddles to test out. He also brought along a variety of pickleball wares for people to purchase (from Bob’s Racquet Works).

Planting some seeds:

The main show, however, was a short challenge tourney pairing-up four of our local politicians with experienced players. Deputy Mayor Dane Nielsen, Councilors Paul Allen, Nadia Dubyk and Tom Allwood, none of them pickleball players, were wonderful sports and picked up the game with amazing dexterity. There are currently no dedicated pickleball courts in the Municipality of Grey Highlands so we took this opportunity to plant a few seeds.

Councilor Dubyk wrote in an email later: “Thank you for a fun and interactive afternoon. I now understand the pickleball craze firsthand.”

There was also a demonstration match with four seasoned Club members (3.5/4.0) just to showcase a bit of pace and control in contrast to the sedate nature of the celebrity matches.

One false note:

We did have one unfortunate, false note to the afternoon when a woman in her 60s, interested in hitting a few balls, fell backward awkwardly, giving herself a large bump on the back of her head. She was assisted by a local firefighter as we waited for the ambulance to transport her safely to the nearby hospital, where she was iced and x-rayed and observed for several hours before being released. She reported that evening to us that nothing was broken, she expected to recover in a few days, and she appreciated the care she received.

Send in the clown!

On the positive side, lots of fun was created by Dilly our pickleball clown. Dilly (AKA Cara Sullivan), was quite silly and we used her to clear up some common pickleball misconceptions, most notably, that pickles have any place in the sport of pickleball. She was also schooled on proper footwear and suitable playing attire. She was a big hit!

A good day for pickleball:

In short, on balance, it was a good day for pickleball in Grey Highlands, and guess what? We were invited back to the Flesherton Fling next year! Pretty sure we’ll go.

Karen Alton,

Steering Committee, Member-at-Large, Pickleball Club of Grey Highlands
